Destination Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

« The capital city, one of the cities with the best climates worldwide, stands out for its privileged geographical location: it is a cultural and economic link between Europe, Africa and America.»

Our Apartments Ciudad Jardín are in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the most cosmopolitan city of the Canary Islands and one of the cities with the best weather worldwide. Its privileged geographical location makes the capital be a cultural and economic link between Europe, Africa and America. Its flight connections place the island at just two and a half hours from Madrid, at four hours from the main European cities, and at six hours from America. The capital is considered the economic heart of the Canary Islands due to its status of mandatory crossroads between three continents. Its intense commercial activity makes it the shopping centre of the archipelago. Merchants from distant countries such as India or the Far East, who have chosen this city to develop their commercial activity, cohabitate with traditional commerce and modern shopping centers.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria shows its richest identity through its port, Puerto de La Luz y de Las Palmas. The port is characterized by the constant flow of people, goods, and services. Doubtlessly, this welcoming capital opened to the world is a true sign of cultural mix and coexistence. Precisely in this district, you will find the Port Market, one of Spain`s top five food markets. Its beautiful architecture of forged iron stands out, as well as the quality of its products, which include our famous “papas con mojo”.

In the Port district, you will also find the famous “Poema del Mar”, the great new aquarium of the capital city. It feels like being in an underwater world apart, enjoying over 350 species that live here.

The city is home to major international festivals, such as the ones of classical music, film and opera. The artistic and cultural events experienced here do position the city as a reference in the Canary Islands and in the rest of the land. The Carnival, the Jazz Festival and the Theatre and Dance Festival are just a few examples. Furthermore, its cultural richness covers a great network of museums, exhibition halls, theaters and auditoriums for all audiences. Among them, the Theater Pérez Galdós stands out, which has the name of Vegueta´s illustrious son.

The historic quarter named Triana, which belongs to the Center District, is one of the most charming places of the capital city. Here, you will enjoy strolls through cobbled lanes and picturesque spots with an historical touch.  The famous street Calle Mayor de Triana stands out for its architectonical beauty and its intense shopping activity. The historic center of Vegueta show the traces of the passing by of kings, explorers and distinguished visitors. Strolling around these colonial-style streets feels like travelling to the past of a city with more than five centuries of history. This place has witnessed the presence of historical figures such as Columbus, but also the avarice of pirates from all over the world due to its strategic location. Furthermore, its buildings have witnessed the birth of renowned figures such as Benito Pérez Galdós or Alfredo Kraus.
In the Center District, you will discover spots, buildings and monuments of interest such as the square Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana, one of the most emblematic places of the city and host of the most important building of the Canarian religious architecture: the Cathedral of the Canary Islands. The Gabinete Literario (Literary Forum Building), la Casa de Colón (Columbus Museum House), Atlantic Centre of Modern Art, the Canarian Museum or the famous Vegueta Market are just some of the spots you must visit in your journey through the historical center.

Doubtlessly, Gran Canaria is the ideal place for practicing sport in the open and direct contact with full nature. The kindness of the sea and the wind, as well as the average water temperature of 20º make of Gran Canaria the perfect place for surf, bodyboard or kitesurf lovers. For example, La Cícer, on the one extreme of our urban beach Las Canteras, is the most famous sruf spot of the island. Naturally, Gran Canaria is also a prominent place for lovers of diving, fishing and sailing. An internationally acclaimed regatta sailing course attests the marine character of the capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, that is alsopart of the World Surf Cities Network.
However, Gran Canaria is also a refuge for lovers of the rugged mountains, the green and the humidity. The island offers an extensive trail network for hiking accessible to all audiences with more than 300 kilometers of paths and 33 protected natural areas.

Naturally, you can also conquer some spots of our island by bike, which is a healthy way to get to know it. You can choose the difficulty level, the duration and the route you like: biking relaxed through the capital city streets and promenades, or putting your fitness to the test by biking through mountains and abrupt landscapes.

Definitely, it is a privilege enjoying beaches and marinas that not only possess the Canarian natural beauty, but also highlight for their quality. In Gran Canaria, Maspalomas, Meloneras and Playa del Inglés, among others, have been awarded with the prestigious Blue Flag. Certainly, Maspalomas will take your breath away. From Playa del Inglés up to the old lighthouse at its extreme, Maspalomas embraces the Charca (i.e. pond) and the breathtaking Dunes, that are declared special natural reserve.

However, the jewel of the capital city is Las Canteras: one of the most famous and special urban beaches in Europe. The beach, which is just one and half kilometers away from our apartments,  makes us relax and disconnect, but also practice all kind of water sport activities. Las Canteras proudly shows “La Barra”, a natural reef which is aproximately 200 meters from the shore and protects from high tides in great part of the beach. This singular rock barrier allows us to enjoy the great marine reserve of the beach and walk over the water on low tide days.

On the one beach extremes, besides La Cícer, you will find the emblematic Auditorium Alfredo Kraus, one of the most singular buildings of the capital city, uno de los edificios más singulares de la capital, home of the Gran Canaria´s Philharmonic Orchestra and host of the International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Music Festival of the Canary Islands, among others.
